Episode 4 — Two packs in the drawer. The hardest habit to break

Episode description

Saturday morning, half ten. Iza’s got her coat on, keys in hand, one foot out the door: “I’ve run out of Zovirax, I’m off to the chemist’s.” Tomasz, over his coffee mug: “have you checked the app — are you sure you haven’t got any?” Iza types in the name — and sees two packs. Two. Sitting in the drawer, bought, unopened. One she’d bought, one he had.

This episode isn’t about an app feature. It’s about a HABIT. The hardest thing about using a digital medicine cabinet isn’t learning the app — it’s resetting one reflex drilled in over years: “I need a medicine, so I go to the chemist’s.” That reflex runs on autopilot, and it skips right past everything you already know is at home.

We break the old habit down into three costs, all from that one scene:

  • Money — you pay a second (sometimes third) time for something already in the drawer.
  • Time — the drive and the hunt for an open chemist, especially of an evening or on a Sunday, when surprisingly few are actually open.
  • The environment — the duplicate sits there, goes out of date, and ends up as waste. You don’t chuck a medicine in the bin or down the sink — you take it back to the pharmacy. Fewer duplicates means fewer out-of-date medicines and less to dispose of.

The second layer: why the habit is so stubborn — autopilot, “quicker to buy than check”, not quite trusting a “digital memory” — and how to break it with a small ritual: ten seconds in the app before you leave the house.

The line we hold: the mojApteczka app doesn’t prescribe anything and doesn’t treat anything. It shows you what you told it you had in the house. Zovirax here is purely an inventory example — we never say what it’s for or how to take it.

What the app actually does (and what helped that Saturday):

  • The “what’s in my cabinet” list plus search by name — type the name and see how many you’ve got, before you head out for another pack
  • Duplicate detection by barcode when you add a new pack — a second chance, for when the habit wins and you’ve already bought it
  • Expiry-date reminders — so you don’t find out about the duplicate only once it’s nothing but waste
  • A shared family cabinet — you both see the same list, so you don’t buy the same thing twice. Not surveillance — one shared view instead of two separate guesses

Phone first, then keys.

Materials:

  • The mojApteczka app: mojapteczka.pl — free, works offline
  • Return unused medicines to the pharmacy (take-back / safe disposal) — never the bin or the sink

About AI in this episode. The dialogue was written by Tomasz Szuster. The voices you hear are AI-generated synthetic voices — not recordings of the hosts. We say this straight out, because we think it should be the standard for any podcast made this way. Full details in the show notes and in the episode outro.
